Hypnosis Facts vs. Fiction

Hypnotherapy has a long and rich tradition which dates back to ancient Egypt. In the mid-19th century it was introduced to European and American audiences first by Franz Mesmer and then James Braid. Some of the practices and philosophies of those early pioneers in the study of hypnotherapy as a treatment modality resulted in misconceptions about hypnosis , some of which persist today.

However, the facts about hypnosis are:

  • Hypnosis was approved by the American Medical Association in 1958. It was approved by the American Psychiatric Association in 1962.
  • Hypnosis has been in use in its modern form since 1843. However, hypnosis has been used in some form by numerous cultures for thousands of years.
  • Hypnosis is a completely natural state of mind that bypasses the critical conscious mind and heightens receptivity to suggestions. This is how change occurs.
  • Hypnosis can be used for almost ANY condition – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.

ALL hypnosis is really self-hypnosis.

  • The Hypnotherapist is a skilled guide who you leads you through the steps necessary to achieve your desired goals and outcome.
  • Hypnosis and the Hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything you do not want to do. You are always 100% in control at all times. You and you alone decide whether or not to accept suggestions. Your success in creating change depends on your willingness to do so!
  • In order for hypnosis to be successful, three things must occur:
    • There must be willingness on your part.
    • You must believe there will be a changed outcome.
    • There must be rapport (trust) between you and the hypnotherapist that you choose to work with.
